There are 13 New Moons in 2019 and this one is the first of them. The January New Moon in Capricorn is a special one for another reason: this is also the first solar eclipse, a partial solar eclipse visible only in East Asia and Pacific.

A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon covers only a part of the Sun. The Moon, the Sun and the Earth don’t align in a perfectly straight line, and the Moon casts only the outer part of its shadow, the penumbra, on Earth. From an earthly perspective, this looks like the Moon has taken a bite out of the Sun. A partial solar eclipse can only be safely observed with a special solar filter or by looking at the Sun’s reflection.

Long time ago, solar eclipses usually caused fear and most people believed that some monsters were devouring the Sun. These are some legends about three of these Sun-eating monsters.

Astrologically speaking, this new moon and partial solar eclipse in Capricorn is about establishing long term goals for your career. It is also about improving your public image.
