There are 12 full moons in 2019 and this one is the first of them. On January 21st, there is a Full Moon in Leo (Sun in Aquarius opposite Moon in Leo), a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse. The Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.
This first lunar eclipse of the year will be visible throughout most of North America, South America, the eastern Pacific Ocean, western Atlantic Ocean, extreme Western Europe, and extreme Western Africa.
The January Full Moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Wolf Moon, because this was the time of year when hungry wolf packs howled outside their camps. Other names for this full moon were Old Moon or the Moon After Yule. But how does it influence us?

A Zen Story for January Full Moon
The Zen teacher’s dog loved his evening romp with his master. The dog would bound ahead to fetch a stick, then run back, wag his tail, and wait for the next game. On this particular evening, the teacher invited one of his brightest students to join him – a boy so intelligent that he became troubled by the contradictions in Buddhist doctrine.
«You must understand», said the teacher, «that words are only guideposts. Never let the words or symbols get in the way of truth. Here, I’ll show you».
With that the teacher called his happy dog.
«Fetch me the moon», he said to his dog and pointed to the full moon.
«Where is my dog looking?» asked the teacher of the bright pupil.
«He’s looking at your finger».
«Exactly! Don’t be like my dog. Don’t confuse the pointing finger with the thing that is being pointed at. All our Buddhist words are only guideposts. Every man fights his way through other men’s words to find his own truth».
The next Full Moon will be on February 19th: a Full Moon in Virgo (Sun in Pisces opposite Moon in Virgo).
Until then, on February 4th, there is a New Moon in Aquarius (Sun conjunct Moon in Aquarius).
The second total lunar eclipse of the year will be on July 16th, visible in much of Europe and Asia, Australia, Africa, South-East of North America, South America, Antarctica, Pacific and Indian Ocean.
This full moon is also the first of three supermoons for 2019. The second will be on February 19 and the third on March 21. Of these, the February 19th full moon will be the closest and largest full supermoon of 2019.
